Clinch River Challenge Canoe Trip
February 5, 2018 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm EST
The Great Smoky Mountain Council is sponsoring a 100 mile plus high adventure Scout/Venturer canoe trip on the Clinch River in 2018. The trip will start near Fort Blackmore in SW Virginia on Sunday May 27th and we will canoe down the Clinch River to the US 25E Bridge near Tazewell TN ending on Saturday June 2nd. Exact itinerary is to be determined and extra activities may be included by group decision.
This contingent will be very similar to a trip to Northern Tier National High Adventure Base. The contingent will have at least one preparatory meeting and a practice canoe outing before the trip. Equipment can be transported by truck and trailer but may be required to be taken in the canoes on different days.
The scouts will have the opportunity to work on, in part or whole, at least the following: Canoeing MB, Camping MB, Cooking MB, Fishing MB, Orienteering MB, the 50 Mile Afoot/Afloat Award, and associated Venturing requirements. Other merit badges may be offered depending on interest and the adult make-up of the trip.
Requirements: Scouts will have to be First Class, at least 13, pass a swimmer’s test, and have the approval of their Scoutmaster. Coed Venturers will have to be 14, pass a swimmer’s test, and have the approval of their Crew Advisor. The cost of the trip is tentatively set at $100, (not including extra activities). Adults will have to pass a swim test and canoeing experience would be very helpful. Adults must be approved by the Council.
