Jamboree on the Air-JOTA

October 20, 2018

What: Annual Scouting event that uses amateur radio to link Scouts around the world, across the country and in your own community.

When: Third full weekend of October (this year it’s Oct. 19-21, 2018). There are no official hours, so you have the whole weekend to make JOTA contacts. The event officially starts Friday evening during the JOTA Jump Start and runs through Sunday evening.

Who: Scouts and Venturers of any age, plus their families. (Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, Sea Scouts, Career Explorers, and STEM Lab members)

How: Once at the ham radio station, the communication typically requires speaking into a microphone and listening on the station speakers. However, many forms of specialized communication can also take place, such as video communication, digital communication using typed words on the computer screen transmitted by radio, communication through a satellite relay or an earth-based relay (called a repeater), and many others.

In addition to being incredibly fun, JOTA and JOTI count toward Scouting requirements:

Location One:

Radio Amateur Club of Knoxville along with Middle East Tennessee Emergency Radio Services will operate JOTA at the Marble Springs Historic Site – 1220 West Governor John Sevier Highway, 37920 from 11:00am to 2:00pm on Saturday, October 20th.

Location Two:

The Amateur Radio Emergency Service of Sevierville will operate JOTA at Community Center Park, 415 Railroad Street, Sevierville TN 37862 from 9AM-12PM.  Contact is Cletus Grissom at 865-566-8912.
