Ranks and Advancement


Scouts advance through a series of ranks. Cub Scout ranks based on grade, while Scouts BSA, Venturers and Sea Scouts earn higher ranks through their achievements. Scouts advance at their own pace and can start truly at any age, though get the most out of our program when starting early. Only about six out of every 100 scouts achieves the rank of Eagle Scout.

Cub Scout Ranks

LION: Kindergarten
Participate in fun activities and adventures
TIGER: First Grade
Fun activities designed to promote learning and teamwork
WOLF: Second Grade
Do adventures, learn basic outdoor skills, and engage in community service projects
BEAR: Third Grade
Focus on skills, teamwork, and outdoor activities
WEBELOS: Fourth Grade
Engage in outdoor adventures, community service, and leadership experiences
ARROW OF LIGHT: Fifth Grade
Adventures focused on skills and values that align with the Scouts BSA program

Scouts BSA Ranks

SCOUT:
Learn basic Scouting skills and values
TENDERFOOT:
Focus on basic outdoor skills, first aid, and principles of citizenship
SECOND CLASS:
focus on developing outdoor skills, leadership, and community service
FIRST CLASS:
Learn essential outdoor skills, including camping, cooking, and first aid
STAR:
Grow leadership skills and commitment to service
LIFE:
Demonstrate leadership, commitment, and participation in troop activities and service projects
EAGLE:
Earn at least 21 merit badges, demonstrate leadership, and complete a significant service project

Venturing Awards

VENTURING:
Personal growth, leadership development, and community service
DISCOVERY:
Participate in adventures and training
PATHFINDER:
Focus on leadership skills and personal growth
SUMMIT:
Demonstrate leadership, mentor others, and complete a significant service project

Sea Scouting Ranks

APPRENTICE:
Learn Sea Scout ideals, courtesies, procedures, and responsibilities
ORDINARY:
Service and land & sea protocols
ABLE:
Complete knowledge in seamanship skills, leadership and maritime history
QUARTERMASTER:
Teaching all Sea Scout Skills to others and complete a significant service project
