Training

Well trained volunteers are vitally important, and the Boy Scouts of America offers abundant opportunities for volunteers to expand their knowledge and skills. Many in-person training opportunities are offered throughout the Great Smoky Mountain Council, while others are offered online by BSA.

Youth Protection Training

Youth Protection Training is mandatory for all BSA registered adults. Adult Scouters must get a new certification from the BSA online YPT course every two years.

The online course takes 1 to 1.5 hours to complete. You do not have to be a registered member of the Boy Scouts to take the course, but if you are, be sure to have your BSA Person ID number ready before you start the course. Anyone who completes the course and the test will have an opportunity to print a YPT Card.

Wood Badge

Wood Badge is the highest level of adult Scout leader training available, an advanced, national leadership course open only to Scouting volunteers and professionals. It was first presented in England by the founder of Scouting, Lord Baden-Powell, and he introduced the program into the United States during a visit in 1936. The week-long outdoor course is offered by various councils throughout the country.

The next Wood Badge course will be in the spring of 2025. Registration coming soon!
