Elise Massey of the Collier Restaurant Group and Chair of the Great Smoky Mountain Council’s Women of Achievement Committee invites you to join us October 30 at The Foundry as we celebrate women across the East Tennessee area and their significant contributions to our community. We’re pleased to announce that Karen Weekly will serve as the keynote speaker and host of this inaugural event honoring Ann Furrow, Linda Goff, and Corinne Cheney.

ANN FURROW is being recognized as our Community Leader. Mrs. Furrow has been deeply involved in supporting the East Tennessee community in many different areas. Her leadership at the University of Tennessee has been especially impactful, with decades filled with “firsts.” She was the first female to join the men’s golf team (for a short time when that was allowed) and was the first woman to receive a full men’s athletic scholarship at UT. She was also the first recipient of the prestigious Robert R. Neyland Academic Scholarship. She was the first woman appointed to the UT Board of Trustees, where she served for 18 years. Mrs. Furrow helped get women’s golf added as an official UT sport. She served as interim head coach of the women’s golf team until 1992 and then volunteered as an assistant coach for fifteen years. Furrow is a founding board member and vice chairman of Spiritual Heritage Knoxville. She previously served on the boards of UT Athletics, UT Medical Center, Covenant Health, Fort Sanders Foundation, and International Board of Joni and Friends. She currently serves on the National Board of AnGeL Ministries.

LINDA GOFF is our Scouting volunteer honoree. Linda has influenced the lives of hundreds of Scouts and Scout volunteers across the country since 1982. Over the past 42 years, she has made significant contributions at the unit, district, council, area, territory, and national levels. Linda’s specialty is Cub Scout Day Camp training. She has been Course Director of the National Camp School Course Director training, Cub Scout section from 2014-16. Mrs. Goff has also served as the Southern Region, Area 6 Cub Scout School Course Director from 2011-2023; prior to that, she was an Area 6 Cub Scout Day Camp Instructor for 10 years. She has also served Scouting nationally as Chair of the Guide to Advancement Task Force 2014-15; Chair of the Lone Scout Handbook Task Force 2013-14; National Advancement Advisory Panel 2012-16; National Camp School Syllabus Task Force 2009-13; Cub Scout Literature Task Force 2003-08; Wolf Book Task Force 2002; Cub Scout Roundtable Task Force 1998-99; and since 2022, she continues to serve on the Day Camp Resource Book Committee.

CARINNE CHENEY, a medical student at Lincoln Memorial University Medical School, joined Venturing Crew 008 at 14 but had been a tagalong with her brother for many years before that. While in Venturing, she earned the very rare Grand Slam award after attending Philmont in 2013, Sea Base in 2014, Okpik Northern Tier in 2015, and Summit in 2017 – all of Scouting America’s high adventures bases. She has served Scouting in a variety of ways, including summer camp staff and as Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 42G in Oak Ridge, the first Scouts BSA Troop for girls chartered in the Great Smoky Mountain Council. Her service didn’t stop once she enrolled in the University of Tennessee, where she served as president of Alpha Phi Omega (APO), a service organization founded on the principles of Scouting, with its core values of Friendship, Leadership, and Service. Her service extends beyond Scouting with  Remote Area Medical Clinic, Center for Courageous Kids, Keep Knoxville Beautiful, Knoxville Zoo, Emerald Youth, Shades of Development, Beardsley Community Farm, and countless other organizations. She is in her fourth year of medical school and hopes to be an internal medicine physician.

If you would like to honor a female in your organization, there are a variety of sponsorship opportunities or tributes available. Contact April.McMillan@scouting.org for more details.
