All Scouting units are asked to participate in the Scouting for Food Drive this year. This food drive is designed to help support the local food pantries in the 21 counties of the Great Smoky Mountain Council while also celebrating the anniversary of Scouting.
Door hanger templates are available on the website and a limited number of bags are available at the Scout Center in Knoxville in mid-January. Scouts can visit homes in a selected community and distribute door hangers and bags prior to January 29th. The Scouts will then return on January 29th, or an alternate date, to collect the food. Each Scout should be in uniform and use the buddy system when visiting homes in their neighborhood.
Units can also coordinate with local grocery stores to set up in front of the store to collect items. Units can approach individual grocery stores to set up dates, times, guidelines, etc. This has proven to be an effective way to collect large amounts of items.
Food pickup will be on Saturday, January 28th, 2023, the door hangers are customizable, and another alternate date can be used at the unit’s discretion. Collected items can be delivered locally (Food Pantry, Church, Community Center), to the Scout Service Center in Knoxville, or directly to Second Harvest Food Bank. We will be filling up a Second Harvest Truck of collected items through February 5th.
Be sure to fill out the tally sheet for Scouts participating and items collected via the Tentaroo form no later than Friday, February 17, 2023.
Units are also encouraged to partner with local business and their Charter organizations to collect food. Units can place a box with details (sign) out in the community and work with whomever to promote the drive. Units then can pick up the box. This could also be a great way to coordinate and combine Scout Sunday.
