Soldier, Educators, Chosen for Awards

Logan Hickman, chair of the 16th annual Boy Scouts of America Campbell County Good Scout Award Dinner, is pleased to announce the 2024 honoree is Lieutenant Colonel Knud Salveson, US Army (retired). This yearly ceremony and dinner will occur at the Ball Farm Event Center, 2107 General Carl W. Stiner Highway, LaFollette, Tennessee, on Thursday, March 14, 2024, at 6:00 PM. The money raised at the event will support Campbell County Scouting in 2024. The yearly dinner has evolved into Campbell County’s premier recognition banquet.
Colonel Salveson was born in Munich, Germany while his parents were stationed with the US Army in Germany in 1950. He lived with his parents in various states and European countries. He is our first Eagle Scout Good Scout Award recipient. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1972. He was later commissioned as a US Army 2nd Lieutenant and served in the Air Defense Artillery and Infantry branches. He earned several military awards in more than 20 years of service.
After military retirement, Colonel Salveson served for 22 years as the Senior Army Instructor for the Campbell County High School JROTC Program. He co-started the JROTC program from inception, training 9-12th grade students, improving graduation rate, and winning multiple East Tennessee and southeastern state competitions as a Raider, Drill, and Color Guard coach. The CCHS JROTC program earned the Honor Unit with Distinction Award 20 consecutive years. He was awarded the US Army Cadet Command, 7th Brigade JROTC Senior Army Instructor of the Year Award and the US Army Cadet Command JROTC Gold Instructor Award in 2008. He retired from the school system in July 2015. Since his second military retirement, he has worked for numerous organizations to include the Campbell County School System and Pyro Shows. He and his family live in Caryville. They are active in the LaFollette Church of God.
The Scouts are equally excited to honor John and Margaret Faulker as the 5th and 6th recipients of the Elbert K. Fretwell Award for exceptional service to education. Margaret is from London, KY and John was raised in Campbell County. The Faulkners started their educational careers in the early 1960s and retired in 2004 for a combined total of 78 years. Margaret first taught in Ohio at the age of 18. From there, she enrolled at the University of the Cumberlands where she met John and together, they taught in Michigan, Williamsburg, KY, and Campbell County. One of John’s track teams won the Kentucky State championship. Margaret taught kindergarten, first, fourth, and fifth grades. John taught high school biology and coached track. Margaret assisted in the creation of the Christian Academy of Campbell County and served as the first principal. They are members of the First Baptist Church of LaFollette, where they have been active in Samaritan’s Purse and Celebrate Recovery. They live in LaFollette.
The previous Good Scout Award recipients are Mr. Edward Balloff, Mrs. Juanita Baird, Colonel Tommy C. Stiner, the five Baird brothers, General Carl W. Stiner, the Campbell County Honor Guard, Mr. Lansden E. Hill, the Campbell County High School football team coaching staff, Mr. Mike Malicote, Mr. John T. Reynolds, Mr. Hack Ayers, Pastor Ronnie Arnold, Dr. James Farris, Mr. Clarence Lowe, and Judge Shayne Sexton.
The previous Elbert K. Fretwell Outstanding Educator Award recipients are Larry and Sue Ellen Nidiffer, Linda Agee, and James Davis.
