Training
Well trained volunteers are vitally important, and Scouting America offers abundant opportunities for volunteers to expand their knowledge and skills. Many in-person training opportunities are offered throughout the Great Smoky Mountain Council, while others are offered online by Scouting America.
Youth Protection Training
Youth Protection Training is mandatory for all Scouting America registered adults. Adult Scouters must get a new certification from the Scouting America online YPT course every two years.
The online course takes 1 to 1.5 hours to complete. You do not have to be a registered member of Scouting America to take the course, but if you are, be sure to have your Person ID number ready before you start the course. Anyone who completes the course and the test will have an opportunity to print a YPT Card.

Courses include:

There are a number of resources for volunteers at the unit level. For example, for Cub Scout den leaders, there are videos for your specific den; this is especially helpful for first-time den leaders.

And for Scouts BSA volunteers, visit the Troop Leader Resource Hub. This is an amazing collection that answers most any question that you might have at the troop level.
Wood Badge
Wood Badge is the highest level of adult Scout leader training available, an advanced, national leadership course open only to Scouting volunteers and professionals. It was first presented in England by the founder of Scouting, Lord Baden-Powell, and he introduced the program into the United States during a visit in 1936.
Wood Badge is designed to meet the advanced leadership needs of all Scouters, particularly unit level Scouters, such as Cub leaders, Scoutmasters and assistants, Venturing Crew Advisors and assistants, Sea Scout Skippers and Mates, Committee Chairs and members. Additionally Scouters serving at the district and council levels can achieve greater effectiveness through Wood Badge.
The next Wood Badge course will be over two weekends: August 15-17 and September 6-7, 2025. Each weekend will consist of full days, starting early morning and ending in the evening.
